History of the
Because Mothers Matter Awards (BMMA)

Since 2015, the Because Mothers Matter Awards (BMMA) have served as a powerful tribute to the resilience, dedication, and transformative influence of mothers across Canada. Organized by Mothers Matter Canada (MMC), these awards honour both prominent Canadian mothers and outstanding participants of the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program, a national initiative that empowers mothers as their children’s first teachers. Over nearly a decade, the BMMA has celebrated 33 exceptional mothers whose stories of perseverance and leadership embody the spirit of maternal strength and social change.

Each year, the BMMA highlight stories of mothers who have overcome adversity through immigration challenges, single parenthood, economic hardship, or Indigenous advocacy. The awards have grown to reflect the diverse landscape of motherhood in Canada, celebrating women who have raised their children against the odds and paved the way for others through mentorship and leadership.

As part of its mission to support vulnerable mothers, the BMMA also serves as a fundraising event, with live auctions and donor contributions helping sustain MMC’s educational programs. These efforts have ensured that the HIPPY program continues to thrive, reaching new communities and evolving to meet the changing needs of Canadian mothers.

From its inaugural ceremony in 2015 to its most recent celebration in 2023, the BMMA has recognized individual achievements and built a legacy of empowerment.
