4 Months of BEACON: Bringing Mental Health Care Within Reach

Updated: 3 days ago

When Mothers Matter Canada launched BEACON in March 2026, the goal was simple but urgent: to ensure no newcomer or isolated mother faces a mental health crisis alone, unsure of where to turn. Four months later, the numbers tell us this goal is becoming a reality – and the stories behind them tell us why it matters.

My name is Elena Popova, and as Program Coordinator, I am the bridge between BEACON and the communities we serve. I was born in Latvia and I've spent years working alongside newcomer families, learning about the barriers they carry quietly: new language, new culture, unfamiliar systems, jobs that don't yet exist for them, friendships still being built. It all adds up, and families rarely ask for help until they're already stretched thin.

I know that weight personally. Last year, the pressure of a demanding job and family life caught up with me, and when I finally sought counselling, all that was available to me through provincial coverage was thirty minutes every two months. So when I learned that GreenShield was offering free, accessible sessions for women who needed them, something shifted for me, and I immediately understood what this could mean for the mothers I work with every day.

Why BEACON Matters

When I present BEACON to our partnering sites, the excitement is real and immediate, especially among organizations that don't have an in-house social worker or counsellor on staff, and have had nowhere to refer a mother in distress – until now.

BEACON is part of GreenShield's Women's Health Initiative. Through the GreenShield digital platform, women and mothers gain free access to five confidential counselling sessions, available in multiple languages, with no referral required.

Alongside this, the Essential Medicines program helps eligible families in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia access the medication they need, free of charge. Thanks to our national network of Program Delivery Partners, the service itself reaches families coast to coast.

The First Four Months in Numbers

GreenShield Cares' mid-year survey data confirms the momentum: of the mothers reached, 1,250 unique participants were impacted through the Women's Health stream alone – 350 through awareness-building and 900 through direct participation. Families told us, consistently, that what draws them in is simple: the service is free, requires no referral, and meets them in their own language.

Our reach spanned every region of the country, from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island, and even included three national online sessions. In total, our teams delivered 31 presentations and awareness sessions in the first four months, including a national Home Visitor exchange that reached 60+ Home Visitors in a single session.

Alongside the counselling program, our Essential Medicines outreach, delivered separately with GreenShield Cares, reached 160+ people through a national webinar and four site-level sessions.

Investing Directly in Our Partner Sites

This year, 30 microgrants of $1,000 were distributed to our At Home in Canada partners. These grants are a small but meaningful way to thank the Coordinators and Home Visitors who make BEACON possible on the ground, and ensure frontline programs have a little more room to grow.

We're continuing to deliver presentations directly to partnering sites and their clients throughout the year, so that awareness and access can keep expanding.

The BEACON Impact

Navpreet* is a single mother who attended a BEACON information session offered through our partners at Saskatoon Open Doors Society.

For the last 6 years, she has been raising her two children on her own in Saskatoon. She shared with us that living in a new country and adapting to an new environment has not been easy:

“At times, the pressures of parenting and everyday life made me feel overwhelmed, anxious, and helpless.

After discovering the BEACON program and finding out what professional resources are available to her, she felt hopeful again: “I believe that I can build a better life for myself and my children here in Canada.”
