Trixia and her family came from Dubai, UAE in October 2023, and soon after, found the At Home in Canada programs offered by the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth.
Navigating a new environment, language, culture, and school system was challenging:
“As the saying goes, there is no manual or school for being a parent. And being a first-time mom and a new immigrant here in Canada was a big adjustment.”
At Home in Canada
With the help of the At Home in Canada team in Halifax, Trixia and her family were able to settle in their new country while getting her daughter, Andrea, ready for school.
Our At Home in Canada programs meet families where they are, right in their homes, offering early literacy support that helps children and mothers grow in confidence together.
But the program gave them more than just learning tools. It fostered a love and an excitement for learning in both Andrea and Trixia:
“Every week, we both grow together – learning, reading, playing, and discovering that we can be a strength to each other, a team.”
Small Steps. Big Milestones.
Andrea is now 5 years old and ready to start elementary school. Trixia sees how the program has made her daughter more independent, confident and ready for this next milestone.
“I’m really grateful for this program that helped me feel more connected to my daughter. From the bottom of my heart, thank you – from our family to yours.”
Since the program’s launch in 2021, the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth has empowered over 75 families to thrive, one mother at a time.
