A Letter from Navpreet: Finding Confidence as a Mother

Last month, our team travelled from Yellowknife to Saskatoon, Regina to Vancouver, and throughout Toronto and the GTA to meet with Coordinators, Home Visitors and Parents enrolled in the At Home in Canada programs as part of our Story Project.

In Regina, we met Navpreet.

Originally from India, Navpreet moved to Canada in 2023. After landing in Regina, she was recommended the At Home in Canada programs offered at the Regina Immigrant Women Centre.

Navpreet wanted to share a letter she wrote about the profound impact our programs had on her life.

Today, I feel truly grateful as a mother to share my experience with the At Home in Canada programs.

When I first joined, I thought it was just another educational program for my child. But very soon, I realized it was much more than that. It’s not only about preparing children for school – it's about empowering parents, building confidence, and strengthening the bond between parent and child.

As a mother, I always wanted to give my child the best start in life. But sometimes we doubt ourselves. We wonder, "Am I teaching enough? Am I doing it the right way?" The program gave me clarity, structure, and confidence. It showed me that I am my child's first and most important teacher.

Through the weekly activities, story time, role-play, and structured lessons, I saw a beautiful transformation in my child. My child became more confident, more curious, and more eager to learn. Simple things like recognizing letters, counting numbers, and following instructions became exciting adventures for us.

But the biggest change was in me.

I learned how to be more patient. I learned how to guide instead of instruct. I learned how to turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. And most importantly, I learned how powerful my involvement is in shaping my child's future.

The At Home in Canada programs also created a wonderful community. Meeting other parents, sharing experiences, and supporting one another reminded me that we are not alone in this journey of parenthood.

Today, I can proudly say that my child is more prepared for school – not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well. And I feel more prepared as a mother.

To the Coordinators and Home Visitors – thank you for your dedication, encouragement, and support. You are making a real difference in families like mine.

To the parents who are part of this program – continue believing in yourselves:

Our involvement matters.

Our time matters.

Our love matters.

The At Home in Canada programs are not just preparing children for school – they are preparing families for a brighter future.

Sincerely,
